Día de los Muertos Celebration Featuring Award-Winning Author Yuyi Morales

The community is invited to celebrate the Latin American Day of the Dead at the Springfield Public Library on Saturday, October 26 from 1:00-3:30pm. Festivities open with special guest, award-winning author and illustrator Yuyi Morales, who will give a presentation to be followed by a book signing until 2:30pm. The celebration includes traditional crafts and music presented by El Taller de son Jarocho. The community will also be able to participate in a saw dust mural (alfombra de aserrín) facilitated by César Abarca, of Colectivo MadreArte.

Traditionally, this holiday is observed on November 1 and 2 in many Latin American countries as a way to honor those who have passed away. Springfield’s celebration will include elements from many different countries including storytelling and musical performances. Attendees can make cascarones (festive confetti-filled eggshells), decorate sugar skulls and participate in the making of a saw-dust mural or alfombra de aserrín. Each family can receive a free Yuyi Morales book, while supplies last. There will be additional books for purchase.

The event is free, for all ages, and will be held in the lobby just outside of the library. Event brought to you by a sponsorship from Joan Gray and Harris Hoffman. Partners include Beyond Toxics, Centro Latino Americano, Huerto de la Familia, Escudo Latino, Springfield Alliance for Equity and Respect and the Community Alliance of Lane County.
