The Oscar winning adaption of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ is our next SpringFilm live stream and discussion. Pygmalion is probably best known for being adapted in the 1950s into the theatrical musical and subsequent film, My Fair Lady. This version, filmed in 1938 with Shaw acting as scriptwriter, tells the story of cockney street urchin Eliza Doolittle (Wendy Hiller) being coached by linguist Henry Higgins (Leslie Howard) so he can pass her off as a Duchess.  The film won the 1938 Oscar for Writing an Adapted Screenplay as well as nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress. While the film does have a happy ending against Shaw’s wishes, the writers fought and won to keep the controversial line “Not bloody likely” – the first time a swear word was used in British film.
